Stalking Complaint :According to the report of National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), in the year 2022, nearly four and a half lakh cases were registered against women in India. These are the numbers which have been officially registered, while there are many such cases which could not be registered in police stations or anywhere else. It can be clearly ascertained from these figures that the condition of safety of women is a serious issue in India.
Most of the accused involved in crimes against women are from their nearby areas. They first follow them and later commit the crime. That is why women should be especially alert and cautious of those who follow them. If someone is following you and you feel unsafe, then you can take action against him legally. Let’s know what is the law for this.
Action can be taken under section 354d of IPC
If any person is constantly following a woman or a girl, then doing so is considered stalking. When any man follows a woman or a girl with wrong intentions, then there is a provision to take action against him under section 354D of IPC. If any person follows a woman against her will, follows her despite her repeated refusal, or does anything that makes the woman feel insecure, then in such cases, a police complaint can be filed under section 354D under stalking.
What could be the punishment?
If any person is following you with wrong intentions, then you should immediately lodge a complaint with the police in such cases. Because often such cases are ignored. Then big incidents can also happen in the future. In such cases, a case can be registered under 354 D. In which there is a provision of punishment from one year to 3 years. At the same time, a fine can also be imposed. If the accused follows any girl or woman again, then the punishment can be increased to 5 years. Or there can be both fine and punishment.
Help can also be taken from women helpline
The government has issued 1091 helpline across the country to prevent crimes against women. If any woman or girl feels unsafe anywhere or feels that someone is following her, she can call the 1091 helpline number and ask for help. The complaints are sent to the local police station by the helpline, after which further action is taken.
